Four instruments from the flute family are used in this piece. The extended techniques found in Federico's Little Songs for Children are organized here by instrument: piccolo, c flute, alto flute, and bass flute.

An unwritten technique within this piece is the rapid change of embouchure needed to play from piccolo to bass flute, and back to piccolo. After learning the piece, it is important to practice instrument changes and the logistics of having four instruments on stage.
